New Delhi, May 31: The death toll in the tragic building collapse near Saket Metro Station in South Delhi has risen to six, prompting authorities to register an FIR and suspend two officials of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). Rescue teams continued operations through the night as investigators examined the cause of the disaster.

Officials said several people were rescued from the debris and shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment. According to police sources, some of the victims and injured individuals were preparing for the Foreign Medical Graduate (FMG) Examination, as the area is known for its concentration of coaching institutes and student accommodations.

Authorities have registered a case under sections related to culpable homicide and negligence. A magisterial inquiry has also been ordered to determine whether lapses in construction safety or municipal oversight contributed to the collapse.

The building reportedly housed coaching facilities, offices, and eateries. Preliminary reports indicate that construction work may have been underway on an upper floor at the time of the incident. Two MCD engineers have been suspended pending investigation.

Residents and students in the area expressed shock over the incident, raising concerns about the structural safety of commercial and residential buildings in the densely populated neighborhood.
