PARIS, FRANCE — may31, 2026
Celebrations following Paris Saint-Germain's Champions League victory erupted into violence across France overnight, resulting in more than 200 injuries, extensive property damage, and hundreds of arrests, according to French authorities.
French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez confirmed that 219 people were injured during clashes between police and crowds, with eight victims reported to be in serious condition. Among those hurt were 57 police officers deployed as part of a large-scale security operation.
Authorities arrested approximately 780 individuals nationwide, with more than 450 remaining in custody as investigations continue.

Violence Erupts Across the Capital
Thousands of supporters flooded Paris streets after PSG secured the European title, gathering around major landmarks including the Champs-Élysées and areas surrounding the Eiffel Tower. While many fans celebrated peacefully, several groups engaged in acts of vandalism, looting, and confrontations with police.
Witnesses reported seeing vehicles set ablaze, shop windows smashed, and fireworks launched into crowded streets. Riot police responded with tear gas and crowd-control measures to disperse aggressive groups.
Public transportation services experienced significant disruptions as authorities struggled to maintain order.
Fatality Under Investigation
Officials confirmed that a 24-year-old man died near the Porte Maillot area of Paris. Early reports suggest he may have been riding a motorcycle when he crashed into roadside barriers. Investigators are working to determine whether the incident was directly linked to the disturbances.
A separate incident left a teenager critically injured following a violent altercation elsewhere in the city.
Massive Security Presence
In response to the unrest, approximately 6,000 police officers were deployed throughout Paris ahead of Sunday's official PSG victory parade.
Authorities stated they remain prepared to respond swiftly to any additional violence during celebrations, including events near the Eiffel Tower and a reception hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron.
"We allow freedom of assembly, but not excesses," Interior Minister Nuñez said while defending the security operation.
Political Reactions
The disturbances quickly sparked political debate. French political figures criticized recurring violence linked to major sporting celebrations, calling for stronger public-order measures and stricter enforcement against rioters.
